Haiti Relief Effort

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, an earthquake with the magnitude of 7.0 struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au Prince. The devastating earthquake has damaged hundreds to thousands of buildings. In those buildings, people are trapped and need help. By now, it is estimated that the death count is 50,000 but could possibly top 100,000. People in Haiti need help and they need help now.

Unicef is deploying clean water and sanitation supplies , food, medical supplies and temporary shelter to Jacmel and Port-au-Prince. Also, Unicef will be focusing on children who have become separated from their families to protect them from harm.



 
Care plans to start food distributions using stocks of high-protein biscuits from Care warehouses in Haiti. Care has 133 staff who are on the ground coordinating with U.N. agencies and other aid organizations to gather more detailed information about the damage and will rapidly scale up response based on these assessments.



 

Doctors with Borders supports emergency medical care for the men, women, and children affected by the earthquake in Haiti.



 

Save the Children needs support to help meet the critical needs of children and families affected. The donations given to Save the Children will help provide urgently needed medical attention, safe drinking water, and other necessities.



 

The American Red Cross has pledged an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by today’s earthquake in Haiti, and is prepared to take further action as local responders assess the situation. The Red Cross expects to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.
